Sayre beats Bright for U.S. decathlon titleAssociated PressINDIANAPOLIS — John Sayre overtook first-day leader Tim Bright on Tuesday to win his first national decathlon title while Jane Frederick coasted to her eighth career victory in the U.S. Decathlon and Heptathlon Championships at the Indiana University Track Stadium.Sayre, 24, of Arlington Heights, 111., took the lead after eight events. Bright, a former Abilene Christian University performer and a 1984 U.S. Olympic team member, had held a 32-point lead after the first day’s events, with Sayre in third place.Sayre’s strongest showing came in the pole vault, which he won with a mark of 17 feet, 4% inches. He finished the competition with four personal bests.The 6-3 former Southern Illinois star was the national collegiate runner-up in 1982 and 1984.
