...........SPORTSDELAWARE COUNTY DAILY TIMESSaturday, June 19,197611Chester lands six on first team *Bruce Gordon All-Delco for third timeByHARRYCHAYKUN Dally Ttmtt Sports EditorChester High has dominated local high school track lor the past two years and has come close to the PIAA state championship in both years.And Chester has dominated the All-Delco track team again this season, placing men in six of the 31 positions as selected by the Deleo Track and Field Coaches Association-Only Ridley and inlerboro came close to the Clippers, with each represented in three positions.Unlike last year, when Ridley’s Doug Owens was named for three events (100, 220 and 440) and seven athletes were named to the first team for two events, eight athletes were named this year for two events and there were no three event competitors.Bruce Gordon of Ridley, selected in both the shot put and discus, was named for the third consecutive year. Greer Heindel of Radnor, who made first team as a sophomore and honorable mention as a junior, was named in both hurdles events.Chester’s Fred Hubbard, named in the 880 after breaking a state record last year as a sophomore, failed to make the team this year after an early season injury.Among the others named for two events are Chester's Ricard Jones (both hurdies events), A1 Graves of Haver ford (100 and 440), Carl Everett of Chester (100 and 220), Vince Touey of St. James (880 and mile), Kevin Ufier of Interboro (high jump and triple jump) and Derek Carter of Darby Township (long jump and triple jump).Rounding out the first team are: Dave Aikema of Marple Newtown (220), John Tucker of Chester (440), Mike Fulginiti of Interboro and Tom Hogan of O’Hara (880), PhilDzugan of Ridley (mile), Jim Rutkowski of Chichester and Jeff Uiker of Penncrest (two mile), Rich Iacobuccl of Carroll (high jump) , Jim Hearn of Bonner and Eric Ward of Chichester (pole vault), Walt Jackson of Carroll (long jump), Bryan Pitteof Chester (discus), Bob Evans of O’Hara (shot put) and Mark Simpson of Swarthmore and Mark Willert of Upper Darby (javelin).Dzugan, Jackson and Pitts were the only juniors named to the first team. There were no sophomores named.Jones was second in the state meet 120-yard high hurdles and also ran for Chester’s county record breaking 880-yard relay team. He clocked 39.1 in the 330-yard intermediate hurdles.Heindel was fifth in the district in the intermediate hurdles (39.8), then took third at the state meet with a time of 39.7.Graves ran a wind-aided 9 7 100 at the Central League Meet, then was third in the district meet (10.0) and placed second in the district 440 (48.8).Everett was district ruiuierup in the 220 (22.1) and placed fourth in the state meet. His best time in the KM) was 9.9.Aikema, Central League 220 champion, had a best time of 22.5, but missed the district meet because of an injury.Chester s Tucker ran third in the district 440 ( 49.6), then took fifth in the state meet in the 440 and ran the leadoff leg for the Clippers' state champion mile relay quartet. He is headed for Florida AMThe 880 field, even without Hubbard, was so strong three individuals were named to the first team.Touey, who beat Fulginiti in a dual meet but lost to him in the Delco Meet, ran a 1:56.3, Hogan hada 1:56.5 in the Catholic League Championship Meet and Fulginiti ran a 1:58.9 to win his heat in the District Meet and a 1:58.3 in the Delco Meet.Touey’s best mile was a 4:21.5, whicb got him second place behind Archbishop Ryan standout Mike Thom in the Catholic League Championship Meet.Dzugan’s best was a 4:25.3 in the Philadelphia Meet of Champions, but made steady progress all season and should be an outstanding runner next season. He won the Class A mile and was third in the two mile in the Delco Meet.Rutkowski saved his best race for last when he turned in a 9:31.6 two mile in the Delco Meet of Champions to edge Luker for first place. He was also All-Delco first team in cross country last fall and set course records then at both Rose Tree Park and Ridley Creek State Park.Luker’s 9:32.0 got him second place behind Rutkowski in the Meet of Champions. He finished second in the Delco Meet mile.Ufier had the best high jump in the county this season (6-51/2) and has the second best triple jump in county history.Carroll's lacobucci, also an outstanding cross country runner, cleared 6-5 once and 6-4 three times.Bonner’s Hearn set a school record in his final competition when he pole vaulted 13-7 at the Delco Meet of Champions.Chichester’s Ward cleared 12-9 and sailed over the bar at 12-6 five times. He won the Delco Meet Class B title at 12-6 and was second to state champion Jon Warner of Harriton in the Section Two Meet.Darby Township’s Carter won the district long jump with a meet record 23-9 leap, shattering a record that had stood since 1948. He was fourth in the state finals.In the triple jump, Carter tooksecond in the district meet (46-11/4) and third to the state meet (45-6 3s4).Carroll’s Jackson won the Catholic League championship when he long Jumped 22-8.Ridley’s Gordon threw the discus 151-2 at the Coaches Meet at Ur-slnus College and also had a throw of 150-8. He threw the shot 54-8. % in the Central League Meet He is the second athlete (Paul Pollock of Chester was the first) named All-Delco first team three consecutive years. He was a two-time All-Delco first team football selectionChester’s Pitts got off a 145-6 best throw in the discus and should be well over 150 feet next season.O’Hara’s Evans had the best throw in the shot this season when he got off a 55-1 1/2 toss in the Catholic League Meet.Swarthmore’s Simpson won the district Class AA championship with a throw of 192-5 in the javelin while Willert of Upper Darby got second in the Class AAA competition with his throw of 183-2.Several members of the first team were also named to the second team, including Marple’s Aikema in the 100 (10.0 best time) and 44(1 (50.3 best time). Fulginiti of Interboro for his 4:26.7 mile Luker of Penncrest, who had a 4:24.4 mile in the Central League Meet.Chester’s Tyrone Cooper was named to the second team for both the 120-yard high hurdles (14.7) and 330-yard intermediate hurdles (39.7).Ed Silverman of Sharon Hill, district Class AA runnerup in the 120-yard high hurdles (14.6 best time) and Gary Glowitz of Chichester (39.9 best time in the 330-yard intermediate hurdles) were also named to the second team.Among the others named to the second team were George Sydnor of Radnor in the 100 (wind-aided timesof 9,7 and 9.8) Paul Gallagher of Bonner (22.7 best time, 23.4 to win the Delco Meet of Champions) and George Sydnor of Radnor (22.6 best time) in the 220; Vernon Lucas of Mitchell (50.8 to win the Delco Meet of Champions) in the 440; Norm Lane of Haverford (1:59.4 best time) and Kevin Moore of O’Hara (1:59.0 to edge Lane for first place in the Delco Meet of Champions) in the 880 and Larry Livingston of Springfiled (9:45.6 for third place in the district meet) and Sam Bruce of Bonner (9:37.0 for third place in the Delco Meet of Champions) in the two mile.Among those named to the second team for field events was Rich Grzeszkowiak of Sun Valley in both the long jump (22-5in the District Meet) and triple jump. Robert Hollingsworht of Chester (22-7) was also named in the long jump and Brian Sampson (sixth in the district meet with a jump of 45-5) was named in the triple jump.In the high jump, Brian O’Hara of Sun Valley, who cleared 6-4 several times and Gary Wardius of Chichester, who also cleared 64 several times, were named to the second team.Mike Mitrione of Penncrest and Mark McBrinn of Marple Newtown, both of whom had a best jump of 12-0, were named to the second team for the pole vault.Vince Marano of Carrol! was named to the second team for the discus (149-6 to win the Delco Meet of Champions) and the shot put (51.-1 in a meet against Cardinal O’Hara).Gary Villano of Sharon Hill, who threw the discus 1434, and Tony Pancari of Bonner, who put the shot 53-7 for second place in the Catholic League Meet, were also named to the second team.Named to the second team for the javelin were Kurt Worley of Marple Newtown, who took third place in the District Meet with a throw of 182-9, Jeff Zatkos of Garnet Valley, whothrew 176-6 at the Delco Relay Carnival and Ron Garling of Ridley, who threw 175-3.Among those given honorable mention were William Warren of Chester, Chris Young of Nether Providence and Ed Greenhow of Radnor in the 129-yard high hurdles, Randy Moten of Chester, Milan Lemon of Bonner and Harry Chin of Springfield in the 100, John Shipley of Chester in the 220, Mike Rambert of Carroll, Dennis Smith of Chester, John Edwards of Nether Providence and Pat MeCrossan of Ridley in the 440.Also named honorable mention were Pat Smart of Interboro, Earl Buckner of Chester, Mike Black of Bonner, Tony Baccaro of Mitchell and Jeff Thornton of Haverford in the 880, Mark Beam and Jack McKeever of Springfield and George Kelly of Radnor in the mile, and Jim Cielland of Marple Newtown in the two mile.Named honorable mention in the field events were George Carter of Chester, Sean Carroll of St. James and Dan Gravagno of Lansdowne-Aldan in the high jump, Don Wiseley of Darby-Colwyn, Brian Hamil of Haverford and Jack Protesto of Marple Newtown in the pole vault and James Hunt of Chester in the long jump.Named honorable mention in the triple jump were Steve Massi of Ridley, George Kasinkas of Bonner, Alvin Davis of Nether Providence. Dave Martin of Radnor, Jim Nash of Haverford and Pat Hurley of Garnet Valley.Tim Midgett of Radnor, Joe Revello of Interboro, Maury Zimmerman of Nether Providence and Carmen Cappelli of C-amet Valley were named honorable mention in the discus and Nick Miron of Sun Valley, Ken Wochele of Ridley and Steve Kemball were named honorable mention in the shot put.
