BOSTON (AP) — The baseball adage that the game never is ‘over until the last out never was more true than yesterday. The ‘Boston Red Sox scored eight runs after two were out in the ninth and pulled out a 13-12 victory. And as if that wasn’t enough, ‘the Sox had to go 13 innings to win the second game of a double header with the Washington Sen ators. They won that 6-5 on Jim Pag, Karoni’s leadoff homer in the 13th. Big Pag belted a grand slam homer during the eight-run rally. And Saturday he sacked a pinch homer for a 6-5 Sox triumph over the same Senators. Ironically, Pag’s game-winning belt in the second game was the nly hit yielded by ex - Boston pitcher Tom Sturdivant in six innings of relief. Almost overlooked was Russ Nixon’s pinch single into right field that scored pinch runner Pete Runnels with the winning run in the first game. Willie Tasby was the almost hero for Washington. The former Red Sox outfielder belted a grand slam homer in the top of the ninth when the Senators scored five runs for a 12-5 lead. Tasby also walloped an eighth inning solo homer that pulled Washington into a 5-5 tie. The first game result spoiled the first Washington starting as signment of left hander Jack Mathias. Mathias, recalled from Toronto, retired the first seven Boston batters and has a 12-5 lead go ing into the Boston ninth. He was replaced by Dave Sisler with one run in and the bases loaded. Sisler walked in two runs, gave up the grand slam and a walk and two singles that resulted in the Boston victory. Ted Wills under the rules be came the winning pitcher, even though Tasby tapped him for the grand slam homer. Mike Fornieles was the winning pitcher in the second game. He replaced starter Gene Conley in the eighth after Tasby hit his second homer. Fornieles pitched shutout ball so the end, giving in two fingers, three walks and striking out four. It was his second victory in relief in two days. The Sox play an exhibition to night against the Seattle Rainiers, their top form currently leading the Pacific Coast League.
