Inside Stuff * ★ ★ ★★ ★ ★ ★ ★ By TY COBBBig Bob Albright, who looks like the bright star on the fistic horizon, has slugged his way into a situation u hereby he is right in line for some lucrative shots in thePacific Northwest.Albright is well-known in Reno, having worked here last summer, trained frequently at the Keno Gym, and is managed by Bill Graham of Reno. So what progress the 215-pound youth, who was raised on a farm near Las Vegas, makes in the fistic world will be followed with keen interest here. Especially since Graham baa indicated he'd like Albright to box in Reno this summer—against any good opponent.Albright, who has but one loss in about 20 pro starts Ghat in his second prelim bout), was taken north to Seattle last week. He met Pat McMurtry, unbeaten in about 15 pro bouts, winning 14 via KO. Pat McMurtry, not to he confused with his brother Mike, the college heavyweight star at Idaho State, was being built up as the Northwest successor to Kid Matthews. The bout was a home-town draw, to salvage McMurtry’s record, but from all accounts Albright really won hands down. He battered Pat around, gave him a six-stitch eye cut, and nearly KO'd him in the late rounds. They want Big Bob back in Seattle, and soon. Promoter Jack Hurley is sending out the wires to bid for Don Cocke 11, the British heavy who recently made a gallant stand against Marciano. Albright got more publicityout of flooring Cockell during training than he did for winn:ng 19 pro fights. They like Cockell, too, in Seattle wh re he KO'd Kid Matthews, Incidentally, Albright fought on the Cockell-Marciano card in S. P. and whipped veteran Keane Simmons, Rocky’s sparmate,Matthews, who is talking about a comeback,* commented about Albright: “Big and willing. Throws a pretty good punch, but simple to figure out. I think I could handle him.” Which will be often quoted if they point Matthews and Albright toward a big summer shot in Seattle.Sports scribe Dick Sharp of the Seattle PosMntelli-gencer^had a more complimentary approach to Albright: “The big fellow impressed the fans with his fast-moving style, for a 236-pounder. Albright is a short puncher with both dukes and can certainly take a belt. McMurtry hit him with five rights flush on the chin in the third round and still he kept coming. McMurtry, considering everything that happened to him, wag very lucky that the fight was an eight round bout and not a ten, as there is little doubt but what Albright would have been the winner with a couple of more heats to go . . . There is no doubt but what Albright is going to be a tough cookie for most of the young crop of heavies to handle.”
