Who are Canada'sfittest people?Hundreds * maybe thousands - of Canadians from Manitoba and westerly provinces willcompete next week in Gillette’s fourth annual search for Canada’s fittest woman. From each event - in six cities (see below) - three winners will go to the finals of The Gilllette Challenge, scheduled for July 25 and 26 at Toronto’s CN Tower. The toughest single test of fitness will be the annual climb (it’s a run, in fact) to the top of the tower. The men climb 1,760 steps -one step for every yard in a mile - and the ladies start atthe 600level with1,280 steps to climb. At 10:00 a.m. on June 20,competitors will tackle sit-ups, push-ups, and box steps as follows (sponsoring radio station in parenthesis) Winnipeg(CFRW) - Polo Park Mall;Saskatoon (CKOM) Wildwood Mall; Regina(CJME) - Northgate Mall; Edmonton (CHED)Londonderry Mall; Calgary(CKXL) * Market Mall; Vancouver (CKLG) - Park Royal Shopping Centre. The record for the climb was set last year when Michael Round of Hamiltonchopped five seconds fromhis 1978 time with 10 min. 10.7 sec. He told reportersthat he trained by running up Hamilton’s Mountain wearing a 30-lb. vest. There are 17 preliminary events (two in Montreal) due to occur in 16 cities over the next few weeks. The 51 winners - one male, one female, and one radio personality from each -will go to Toronto on July 24 as guests of Gillette Canada Ltd. for three days. Johri Elliott, Gillette Product Manager, says that* The Challenge started as a modest contribution towards fitness-awareness in Canada - and we supported it through our Personal Grooming division because of the obvious connection between fitnessand pride in appearance. The Challenge has grown beyond expectations and has captured the imagination and participation ofGroupCanadians. After the final success and national publicity surrounding the 1980 finals, Gillette decided to make The Challenge a corporate fitness event. All arrangements, coast to coast, are handled byRose Ruby ProductionsInc. of Toronto. David Mitchell of that companysays: The phone ringsright through the year and letters arrive every day -people want to know the time, place and date of this year’s Challenge. It’s really taken off.Last year’s fastest female up the CN Tower was Bev Crocker - a petite 4 ft. 10 in.from Edmonton - whorecorded 8 min. 42.6 sec. She wrote to Mitchell and Gillette last summer saying: I received my TV and $1,000 prize money and will sure enjoy spending it... maybe even on a bike my size. (She bought the bike.)The fittest man in 1980 was Brian Haring of Toronto who plans to compete again this year. The fittest woman was Carolyn Gammon of Fredericton, but theWest took six of the first nine places. Bruce Bowie of Edmonton’s CHED was top DJ, and the best team was from Edmonton - Bowie, Dave Diduck, and Crocker.Gerald Regan, minister for Fitness Canada, says he applauds Gillette for initiating and continuing the Challenge. Such corporate support is invaluable, he says.Western ExpressDRAW 231, JUNE 10$10,000 WINNERS 2855320 2162568 2538860 1829857 2966056100,000 WINNERS 2083518 1818583119618434470713862708
