Top area runners are readyBy Larry Lockhart The Hawk EyeOnly otie defending champion — Burlington’s Toby Evans in the men’s two-mile — is among the 110 runners preregistered for tomorrow’s Steamboat Days Runs at Westland Mall.Though the field is weak in terms of returning winners, race director Angie Smith said the early entries do include many of the area’s best runners. And the numbers, which seemed low a week or two ago, now appear slightly ahead of the pace for the last couple of years when the event has attracted approximately 300 runners for two races.“I was discouraged a week ago,” Smith admitted. Now I have more work than I can do (processing the entries).”Runners may enter the 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) or two-mile runs tomorrow morning at the mall until 7:30. The races are scheduled to start simultaneously at 8, following a )4-mile kids run at 7:45. The runs start and finish on the perimeter road behind the mall.The longer race has been shortened to 10K this year from the 10-mile distance used in previous years. Smith hopes the change will attract more runners.Since three-time defending champion Phil Kauder of Cascade hasn’t entered this year, number one will be worn by former race director David Rothlauf of West Burlington.Other top local runners in the 10K field include Burlington’s Dennis Glancy, Matt Anderson, Dennis Phillips, Gus Phillips and Russ Fry, Bonaparte’s Mike Nelson and Patrick Brokaw of Stronghurst, 111. The women’s 10K favorite appears to be Burlington’s Angie Donovan, who had a standout year at Tarkio (Mo.) College.Evans is favored to repeat as men’s two-mile champion, while Burlington’s Chris Tee and Janell Godfrey should lead the women’s contingent in the shorter race.
