Mike Colbern and Gary Allenson hit back-to-back singles to left. Then Brandt Humphry doubled to right, scoring Colbern. Allenson came home when Mike Henderson grounded to short.Washington State tied the score in the fifth when Sun Devil pitcher Don Hanna lost his control. He walked two batters and hit another. They also had good pitching for eight innings from Bob Welch, who was credited with a save in their first-round victory over Maine.Welch, however, left the game after yielding a tieing run to Clemson in the ninth and reliver Mark Eighmey got credit for the victory.Bob (Welch) was really tired after the seventh inning, but he pitched pretty tough until the ninth,’’ Coach Ron Oestrike said. Mark (Eighmey) came in and , did a good job in relief.Clemson got two hits off Welch in the opening inning, but didn't get another one until the eighth. The Tigers' only run untilthe ninth was the result of a pair of walks and an infield error in the third inning. In the meantime.
