Wins Amateur Golf TitleDavid Goldman, sophomore engineering major who withdrew from qualifying tryouts with the SMU golf team at the beginning of spring semester, Saturday won the prize plum of Texas amateur golf, the 50th renewal of the Texas Golf association’s amateur championship.Goldman downed the ace of the University of Houston’s golfteam, Jim Hfskey, at Dallas Country club for a 2 and 1 win. Hiskey, who holds the Idaho state amateur crown, was strongly favored to win the Texas championship after he had powered his way to the final round. The new champion replaces his father, widely-known Spec Goldman, as amateur champ. Goldman’s uncle, Ray Kenny, is also a former Texas amateur title-holder.Goldman drew scant attention in the early rounds of the tournament. He won from Warren Higgins, 2 and 1, to start tournament play, then bested SMU-ex Terry Morrow of Nacogdoches. Goldman won over Bobby Goetz of Oklahoma AM, swept past former Champ O’Hara Watts of Dallas and won his semi-finals match against Texas Tech’s Paul Cain.In the championship match, Goldman fell behind Hiskey in the morning round and was 2 under at the half-way point. Three birdies on the back nine of the afternoon round put Goldman back in contention, and he ended the match on the 17th green after some masterful putting.Previous tournaments Goldman has won are the 13-year-old and 15-year-old divisions of the City Junior tournaments. The new champion plans no further tournament golf during the summer school session. If engineering course schedules permit, Gold-j man plans to rejoin the SMU golf
