Oanl New Undisputed Champion*Joe Gans defeated Frank Erne so quickly in the battle for the lightweight championship as to cause Erne’s friends to make the cry of “fluke.” The quick result was indeed surprising, but. as the majority of fight followers thought before the bout that Gans would win, the claim of “fluke” will not get much of a hear* ing.Gans now has a tight grip on the championship, and under the crafty management of A1 Herford is likely U) hold the title for a long time to com4 Gans is the first colored fighter who ever won the title. As a fighter he is entitled to the honor, but the regret goes with it that Gans has a reputation for dishonesty that not even hii •position as champion will wipe out.
