Fitzhugh Wins Pro-Am AgainWoody Fitzhugh successfully defended his championship crown by shooting a four-under par 67 to win the 22nd annual Middle Atlantic Pro-Am Golf Tournament yesterday afternoon at the Cumberland Country Club.Fitzhugh, of Vienna, Va., won last year’s tournament by the same score. He was the Mid-dle-Atlantic Association’s Golfer of the Year in 1984 and 1985. He has also competed in this year’s Kemper Open.Greg Henry of Beaver Creek shot a one-under par 70, nipping Doug McPherson at even par 71, to win the amateur division and Timmy Farr of Lake Arborshot a 62 to win low net gross honors. Jack Abell and Mike Keller were second with 63.Mike Marceron, Mick Robinson, Doug McPherson and Bill Strong took team low gross honors with a 133 followed by a 135 of Steve Ranney, Dave Welborne, Greg Hamilton and John Spring.Team low net went to Fred King, Tim Conner, Harold Appel and Jim McGuire with a total of 120. Glen Barrett, Ron Shell, Mike Hetrick and Mark Corwin were second with 122.Fitzhugh was challenged by Webb Hentzelman, George Graefe, Bill Sporre and Joe Max in the pro division, who each finished two shots back at two under par 69. John Mc-Closkey, Fred Funk and Marceron finished at one-under par 70. Mary O’Rear, Don Skacan and Wheeler Stewart finished at even par 71.Mike Hetrick, Paul Hiskey, Roy Reeve, Mike Cumberpatchand Jerry Iorizzo finished third in the amateur with a two over par 73.Bill Berry, Jim O’Mera, Jim Hewitt, John Chaney and Fred Mershon won closest to the pin honors. Hewitt came the closest with a one-foot, four-and-one-half inch placement on the 145-yard 10th. Berry was closest on the first green at 5-feet, 11 inches, and O’Mera rolled to within 4-feet, 4-inches on six. Chaney landed seven-feet, two-inches on the 12th and Mershon took the honors with a nine-feet, five-inchee placement on the 15th.Beal Records AceGeorge “Mose” Beal scored his first ever hole-in-one while playing at the Bryce Resort Golf Club in Bayse, Va. Beal aced the 165-yard, par three 11th hole with a five iron. He was playing in a foursome with his son, Todd, and Mike and Heather Sanders.
