Brad Haines, who posted an 8-0 record for Morgantown, is one of five pitchers on the official All-State High School Baseball Team announced last night.He’s one of only two juniors on the 15-player honor team. The other is Steve Natemicola of Fairmont West. All of the remaining choices are seniors.No school placed more than one player on the All-State first team.Haines, rated one of the most outstanding baseball prospects in Northern West Virginia, pitched two no-hitters during the regular season and five innings of no-hit ball in the State tourney.Two teammates, shortstop Mark Palumbo and outfielder Pat McGinnis, received honorable mention.Catcher Mike Wilburn of St. Francis, catcher Bill Shahan of Uniersity High, third baseman Bill Moore and outfielder George Neer of Clay-Battelle, and pitcher Steve Smith of Masontown Valley also were accorded honorable mention.Other area standouts mentioned:First baseman—Huffman, Monongah.Shortstops-Skinner, FairmontWest; Tenney, Buckhannon; Colonero, Monongah.Third baseman—Arcurri, Farmington.Catchers—Facin, FairmontEast; Toothman, Fairview.Outfielders—Boyles, Fairmont East; Stoneking, Lewis County; Michaels, Buckhannon; Yost, Fairmont West; Lambert, Rives-ville.Pitchers—Hall, Fairmont West;Wentz, Buckhannon.Besides Hains, pitchers named to the first team include Danny Chambers (13-1) of St. Albans, Jim Willis (7-0) of Logan, Joe Kuhl (9-2) of Parkersburg and Gary Hunt (10-1) of Ravenswood.Kuhl and infielder Steve Johnson (.699) of Barboursville were selected co-captains of the All-State squad.Mike Prettyman of John Marshall (.509) is the ocatcher, with Tom Scott (.493) of Herbert Hoover, Bobby Grimmett (.654) of Man and Steve Hall (.426) of Huntington East the other infielders.Billy Michael ( .349) of Stonewall Jackson, Max Stollings (.523) of Madison Scott and Churck Green(.465) of Charleston High are theoutfielders.Steve Fleak (.365 )South (.365)ofParkersburg South (.365) and Naternicola (.424) round out the first team as utility players.Overall, the 15-player squad boasts a pitching staff that compiled a 47-4 record and an attack which batted the ball at a .491 average clip.The All-State selections weremade after the State tourney by a committee of the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.Mike Brown of Huntington is chairman.
