Tigers MauledTwiceMetsStatesville’s Tigers were ripped apart twice over the weekend by high-flying Greenville as the Mete took an 8-0 victory in the Palmetto State Saturday night, then registered a 14-3 win here Sunday afternoon.The Mets ran their winning streak to eight straight andhave won 10 of their last 11 starts.The Tigers view a golden opportunity to gain ground and escape the cellar. Lexington lost three times over the weekend and the Giants have dropped eight in a row.Statesville goes to Salisbury tonight to meet the Astros in the first of two games there. (UP!) —Richard Petty won the Fireball 300 grand national NASCAR stock car race Sunday with a piece of luck that cost Dave Pearson $500.Pearson cut a tire on track debris and lost the lead of the 300-lap race on the 299th lap.He came in five seconds behind Petty and collected $1,000, or $500 less than Petty received.Petty, the Plymouth driver from Randleman, N. C., started at the pole and held the lead until his first pit stop on the 134th lap. Pearson, driving a Dodge, led on laps 135-141 andthen Petty went back in front when Pearson went to the pit.An unscheduled pit stop fortires cost Petty two laps and another stop cost him a lap and a half. With five laps to go, Pearson stopped for five gallons of gas.He roared out of the pit a lap ahead of Petty but cut a tire on something on the track.
