It was just a matter of staying focused, and the kids did a great job of that all the way through.”Mayfield and Thompson, in particular, focused in on a flawless pitching effort against third-ranked Appleton West (22-2), which had eliminated top-rated Stevens Point in the semifinals. Each gave up only one hit.Sun Prairie started with Mayfield, who went out after two innings with the Cardinals holding a 2-0 lead.Thompson, who has a University of Minnesota scholarship, walked the first batter he faced. He then retired 10 of the next 11 before Dan Johnson singled in the sixth. The Terrors got two runners on base in the sixth, but Thompson retired the side by striking out shortstop Matt Erickson (a .609 hitter), Rick Ramcyzk (.392) and Matt Ste-low (.265). That marked the only time that Erickson, son of West coach Bruce Erickson and a draft choice of the Milwaukee Brewers, struck out in his high school career.Sun Prairie got the only run it needed when Thompson scored in the first inning. He gave up two runs, only one earned. In turning back the Terrors, Sun Prairie became the fifth Big Eight state champion in the last 12 years. Craig won the title in 1983 and 1984. as did Madison Memorial in 1990 and 1992.Sun Prairie reached that level after finishing last in the Big Eight only two years ago. The Cardinals rose to the top of their conference last year, then carried their success to the ultimate level this time. So, for Cardinal faithful, that leaves only one piece to fall into place. That’s the matter involving Thompson, who must choose between his Minnesota scholarship and a chance to sign with the Toronto Blue Jays, who drafted him last week in the 24th round.■ Prescott 24.
