Gohlman Boy Is New Golf KingBy HAROLD V. RATLIFFDALLAS, June 9 (jtt—David Goldman Jr. of Dallas shot three birdies in a row down the stretch today to beat Jim Hiskey of the University of Houston 2 and 1 for the Texas Amateur golf championship and make history. It was the first time in the 50 years of the State Amateur that a father and son had won the championship. And they did it in consecutive years because David (Spec) Goldman took his first title at the age of 46 in 1955.It also put a distinct family to Texas amateur golf because 14 years ago Ray Kenny won the championship and he is the uncle of young David Goldman, j Goldman’s drive to glory today i was a glittering story of fight. The 19-year-old Southern Methodist student was two down at theend of the first 18 holes of the36-hole final. It was his first time during the tournament to be behind. His father, an anxious gal-leryite, wondered how the boy would react to it.He upheld all traditions of the Goldman golfing family. He whittled away at the lead and Hiskeyhad him only one down af the endof 27 holes. He birdied 27, missing an eagle by inches in a 12-foot putt, to pull even. He birdied 11 with a 4-footer after he had drilled true to the green with a 5-iron and he wedged within seven feet for another birdie on 13 He faltered for a bogey on 15 where Hiskey won with a par to cut Goldman’s margin to one-up. They halved to 17 where Goldman got an easy par while Hiskey 3-putted from 25 feet for the bogey that closed out the match.Goldman w'as two-over par for the 35 holes while Hiskey was three-over.Both of the boys automatically qualified for the Texas cup team that will play the professionals in October. An interesting sidelight on the final match was the fact that Goldman, taking mechanical engineering at Southern Methodist University, had a test scheduled this morning at 7:30 o’clock. The starting time of the match was changed from 9 to 9:30 so he make it. He arrived at the course at 9 a.m. and got in a little practice before going out in the championship drive.Goldman was never consideredas a championship possibility until he had reached the semi-finals, lie beat Warren Higgins of Dallas, 2 and 1, in the first round, took out Terry Morrow of Nacogdoches 2 and I in the second round while his father was being eliminated by Herb Durham of Dallas.
