FROSTBURG — Frostburg State University assistant women’s basketball coach Avery Carey has signed a free-agent contract to play for the Myrtle Beach Ballers of the newl created X-treme Basketball Association. Carey, one of 200 players to participate in try-outs for the eight-team league, was among the five free-agents signed by the Ballers. Former Houston Rocket Mitchell Wig gins will serve as the team’s player/coach. ‘I'm excited to get the chance to play professional basketball again and see what doors this might open,” said Carey, who played for the Hol land Hammers in the Nether lands for the 1999-2000 season before coming to Frostburg. The 6-foot-6 Carey expects to be used as a three-guard or swingman and plans to return to FSU once the XBA season ends in mid-August. Carey, a 1999 graduate of George Mason University with a degree in communica tions, was a three-year mem ber of the Patriots’ men’s team. As a junior, Carey served as team co-captain, started 20 of the 27 games in which he played and aver aged 11.1 points and 4.9 rebounds for coach Paul Westhead. After missing the following season with a back injury, Carey returned for his senior year under Jim Larranaga averaging 3.6 points and 1.9 rebounds while helping the Patriots to the Colonial Ath letic Association title and a berth in the NCAA Tourna ment. Prior to George Mason, Carey played at Hagerstown Community College and guid ed the Hawks to a pair of regional championship titles. He earned all-region honors as a freshman and was named to the Region XX All- Tournament Team as a soph omore. Carey is a 1994 graduate of North Hagerstown High School. As a senior, he served as team captain and earned team MVP and first-team All- Tri-State honors. The XBA will feature a few unique rules, with dunks counting as three points and a player fouled while attempt ing a dunk getting three free throws. XBA players will be paid $300 a week and will per form 10 hours of community service weekly. The Bakers start camp on Monday, June 10, and open the season on Friday, June 14. The roster includes Ter ence Newby (guard, North Carolina), Ganon Baker (guard, UNC-Wilmington), Johnny McCrimmon (for ward, Rutgers), Kirk Baker (forward/center, Iowa State), Ishua Benjamin (guard/for ward, N.C. State), John Lazoski (forward, Montana State), Michael Moten (for ward Rhode Island), Jeff Rabey (center, Bradley), LaK ista McCuller (guard, N.C. State), Jeffrey Joseph (guard, Maine), 0.J. Linney (guard/forward, Charleston Southern), Marcell Scott (for ward, Jacksonville Univ.), and Ross Sanders (guard, Coker College). Five of the other seven league teams will be based in North Carolina — Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh/Durham, Rocky Mount and Wilmington. The two remaining teams are Vir e Beach and Columbia (S.C.).
