MVAL quartet all-South CountyBy CRAIG SMITHSONFREMONT — Four Mission-Valley Athlelic League stand-ouls during the past baseball season have earned first-team berths on the All South County Team released by the South County Prep Writers Association (SCPWA).Two cogs in co-MVAL •champ Washington’s season, infielder Mike Jacinto and pitcher Dennis Eckersley, made the [select team, joined •by James Logan’s Dennis Forrest (outfield) and Dave Mateo (first base) to round out. the local representation.Frank Fudenna and Arnie Castro of Washington, Terry Seuser of Newark and Irvington’s Greg Frederick are all members of the select 32-man. honorable mention corps.Both Jacinto and Eckersley were both under-classmen this year, junior and sophomore respectively. Forrest and teammate Mateo were both seniors this year.Eckersley was the only unanimous choice of the selection committee, composed of representatives from The Argus, Daily Review and Livermore Herald.For Eckersley, it was the capper to a dream season which he didn't even start with the varsity, Eckersley was a member of the frosh-soph unit, before one of theWHS regular hurlers dropped out, and he was brought up.Eckersley f.nshed the league season with a laie rush, winding up w.th a 9-3 record for the year, and a 1.28 earned-run-average for the league, strikng out 50 in 49 innings.I n addition, Eckersley pitched and won the Tournament of Champions playoffgame for the Huskies with Mission San Joso.Eckersley pitched a four-h'lter at MSJ, winning 3-0. He also hurled ilia WHS opener in lhe TCC, finally losing a !wo-hider to Antioch, 1-0.Jacinto played secsnd base a most exclusively for the Huskies, and was -one the slickest fielders in the league, and excellent on the double p'ay pivot wjlh shorlslop Arnie Castro.In add tion, Jacinto hit. .361, with 12 runs-batted- n for the year for one of the top averages in the league.Forrest was the league’s leading hitter, wnding up with a .372 average, with a league-lead ng total of (5 runs-balled in and two homn-runs.Forrest has h t over .309 for every one of h s three years with lhe Logan varsity, and was one cf the Log an cap tains this year, along wilh Mateo and John Seoane.I think the big thing that helps Denn-s is that he likes to play so much,” says Coltmentor LcRoy Gallardo, “he works real hard n practice, has the natural ah! ly, anil that’s what helps make him a fine ballplayer.”Maluo, although with just a .225 average was si II rsck-solid all year, and the premier defensive fisl-sacker inthe league.And although h:s bait r.g average was among (he lowest of the All-County team, he still got a loi of big hits for the Colls.MIKE JACINTO. . Seuser is a senior at Newark.Dennis Mays from Amador of the East Bay Athletic League and Skip Turner o: San Loren20 were the other first team outfielders. San Lorenzo won the Hayward Area Athletic -League and Lnished fourth in the TOC.The IlAAL’s Player of the Year, Ken Rodriguez of Marina, is a member of the infield, along with Lyle Walters of Castro Valley.From the rugged AlamedaCounty Athletic League, where TCC champ Richmond plays, conies catcher Rueky Sperou, of San Leandro.Rounding out the first learn were plchers Rich Bailey of Dublin, Bob Scott of Arroyo, and Mike Bailey of San Lorenzo.Olher county players to earn honorable mention wereSteve Bailey.,and _Paul Smith of Amador, Bob Mendez 'and Dick Santaigo of Pacific, Mike Riley of San Leandro, Jeff Hansen of Castro Valley and Barry Soares of Marina.Castro hit a solid ,333 this season and Frederick clipped at a .326 rate in the 15 league games.All-South County SiasehaliPos.
