Canale hired as head coach for Canada’s national junior squadOTTAWA (CP) - Joe Canale is the new head coach of Canada’s national junior team, the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association announced Friday.Canale was an assistant to former national team head coach Perry Peam, who guided Canada to a gold medal at the 1993 worldjunior championship in Sweden. Peam resigned last month to become head coach of Ambri-Piotta in the Swiss Division A League.Canale also coached Chicoutimi of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for the last three seasons before signing with the Beauport Harfangs for the 1993-94 QMJHL season.He'll be joined by assistants Dan Flynn of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League and Mike Johnston from the University of New Brunswick.FlTin claimed the 1993 Memorial Cup championship last month with the Greyhounds.The 1994 world junior championships are scheduled for Dec. 26 to Jan. 6 in the Moravia region of the Czech Republic.The CAHA also announced Friday that John Lovell of the OHL's Guelph Storm will coach the national under-18 hockey team.
