Coles Ends Season For Good, But Now Owns 3A State TitleSolomon Coles finished its baseball season for the second lime yesterday—but this time it is for good. The Hornets won the state Class 3A Negro baseball title by dumping Valley View of Gihner, 4-1.Coles took the state playoff in two games winning the first, 9-2, Friday. The title is the first state baseball title for the Hornets.Coles lost in the semifinals to Waco Carver, but it was found that the winners had two players who were not eligible and Waco was forced to forfeit, putting Coles back in the race.Three runs came in when Clarence Jefferson hit a long homer over the right field fence with Thomas Walker and Eddie Brooks on base in the fifth inning. The other run came in the first inning when Brooks walked, stole second and came home on an overthrow.The only Valley View run came in the last inning as J.D. Peoples singled, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Roger Jones.Two sophomores were the big men in Coach Johnny Clay’s attack. Gates Hardeman pitched six - hit ball yesterday and fanned 12 for the win. In the first game, Brooks struck out 13 to win.Only three — Jefferson, Johnny Elias and Robert Floyd — are seniors on the starting lineup. James Randell, a substitute catcher is also a senior.
