oecona wes i oWithBy DICK PUHR(Examiner Sports Editor)Springfield Superior Tile came up with a pair of runs in the 15th inning Thursday night at dimly lit Mill Creek Park to edge First National Bank, 4-2, and gain a split of the well-played nonleague twinbill.Righthander Ken Croft scattered five hits and Gary Smith slammed a two-run double to spark a four-run fifth as First National copped the opener, 6-2, in a game played in 90 minutes.But the nightcap lasted three and a half hours and finally was decided when Randy Magers’ fielder’s choice drove in the winning run. On the same play a throwing error enabled another tally to score.Then, Andy Newton survived a two-on, two-out Banker threat in the last of the frame in climaxing a banner performance. The strong-armed Newton hurled all 15 innings, striking out 17 andscattering nine hits.First National nearly pulled out the decision in the ninth by loading the bases with one away. But Newton struck out the next two batters.A fine defensive play by centerfielder Doug McCrary prevented Springfield .from winning in the 10th. With the bases full and one away Magers lined to McCrary, who made a running catch and then threw to third to double off the runner.Springfield tied matters in the sixth when Newton singled in Magers, who had doubled with one away on a ball that under normal lighting conditions would have been caught. But because of the poor lighting Magers high fly couldn’t be located and fell in for a two-bagger.Mike Bryan’s single gave the Bankers a run in the second to tie the score after Springfield had posted a run in the first when Roger Johnson came in from third on a wild pitch.The Bankers went ahead 2-1 in the fifth as Roger Byrne looped a double to tally McCrary. Byrne’s fly also couldn’t be picked up.Mike Hatfield, who hadcome on for Ken Moehlman in the eighth, was a tough loser. He allowed just three hits and struck out 12.But he contributed to his downfall by fumbling JimBaker’s sacrifice following Mark Brown’s single. An out later he walked Tom Smith to load the bases.
