CARDINALS ARE GOING STRONGWhen the Cardinals won twelve victories out of fifteen games in their early home stay some baseball fans were inclined to discount their performance by saying “Wait until they go on the road. If they caW continue their good play on foreign fields then lt;we will consider them pennant-contenders.”Not only have the Cardinals held their own on the road but in the first nine games they were victorious six times, losing only three contests. 1 Which brought their record to nineteen victories and six defeats since they started their drive on first place.Pitching has been the question mark with the Cardinals all along. With Paul Dean coming through as a regular starter. Dizzy winning five straight and Carleton hurling a steady ball, some of Manager Frisch’s worries have been removed.Not the least • of the highlights of the Cardinals’ drive toward the top of the league standings bas been their ability to down the World Champion Giants. The Redbirds vanquished the Terry team three times in St. Louis out of four games, and in New York took two of the three games played. Carl Hubbell, world series hero and successor to Lefty Grove as the greatest southpaw in baseball, had to suffer defeat twice at the hands of the up-and-coming Redbirds.The Cardinals continue on the road until Tuesday. The Cards open their June home stand as hosts to the Chicago Cubs, who play in Sportsman’s Park Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. On Sunday. June 10, the Cardinals oppose the Pittsburgh Pirates, who have been troublesome all season.}Fans are looking forward to a night baseball game to be played at Sportsman’s Park Monday evening, June 11. Dizzy has been bragging about that home run he hit in the tenth inning Sunday to win his ball game from the Phillies. Paul hasn’t any home runs to chatter abou„ but he does own a .400 batting average. Dizzy’s mark on Monday was only .231.No story of the Cardinals’ first place drive would be complete without reference to the great hitting of Joe Medwick.
