Lefaive Sees Hope For ScholarshipsLONDON, Ont. (CP) — Lou Lefaive, director of the federal government’s, amateur fitness program, said Saturday Canadian universities are softening their opposition to third-party scholarships for athletics. He told a panel discussion of the Ontario Sports writers and Sportscasters’ Association:“1 think they’ll (universities) try to get away from the U.S. abuse where an athletic director is given a budget and then starts bidding.”The federal government, through Lefaive’s department, has made 100 scholarships available to Canadian athletes. Our program will be broadened. We intend to have a broad base of scholarships. When you get 100 people play-, ing a sport, you will find there arc 10 who are extremely good and there is one of international calibre.•'Our purpose is to encourage a lot of peopie to participate,1’ he continued. The quality of an athlete is the consequence o f participation, not the goal.”
