Smith, who travelled 325 miles to compete in the sportsman hill climb at the Muscatine Motorcycle club's course south of Muscatine on County Road C, didn't make it up the hill on cither of his attempts. Each cyclist has his machine equipped with a cutoff rope so if he leaves the cycle it automatically shuts itself off. That's what happened a split second after Journal photo-rapher Vernon Brown snapped this picture.
