“Mying lYenchman” Proves Ace at Memorial Day Auto Races HereLloyd Vieaux, the flying Frenchman, drove to a spectacular victory in the Empire Sweepstakes at the Memorial -day auto races on the Altar mont fairgrounds. Vieaux completed the 15-mile grind in 15:56.In a time run he established a new record of 29 seconds flat for a hall-mile, thereby breaking the record of 29 1-5 seconds held by Billy Winn of Kansas City.Fully 10,000 jammed the grandstand and grounds for the event, establishing another record and assuring the sponsors of the popularity pi anto racing in this section.Ideal weather started the thrill-seekers toward Altamont before noon., From then until after 3 o’clock when the big race was scheduled to start, a steady stream of cars poured into the village. Residents in the vicinity of the fairgrounds did a thriving business parking cars. The program continued until after 6 o^clock.Only two slight mishaps occurred. In one Dan MacDpnald of Brockton, Mass., suffered a badly wrenched right knee and multiple body bruises when his car hit the fence at the upper turn and was struck by that of Jay Davidson of Oneonta. MacDonald1 was knocked, out and had to be canied -to the secretary’s office where Dr. A. I. Cullen attended him. ;In the second mishap, Johnny Hannon hit the fence and turned around, \ disabling his car. Hannon escaped injury and the race continued undei caution signals until his car could ] be removed from the track. jOtto Burdick of Oneida won the i consolation race with Milt Marion of St. Albans second and Henry G-ritz-, bach of Schenectady third.Ken Fowler of Dayton, O., took second honors in the Sweepstakes with Bob Sail third.Vieaux won the first 5-mile qualifying heat, Sail the second add James Schumaker of Corbin the third.As usual a squad of mounted State Troopers directed traffic and kept the crowd back from the track.The races were^put. on by Ralph Hankinson of New York and Philadelphia and were driven under sanction of the AAA.
