With the Girl Scouts just completing weekly “learn to swim” periods, the recent YMCA-News Journal Instructions for 400 youths and the recently completed lessons given at the city parks, all youngsters here have had an opportunity to learn to enjoy the pools.Typical of the swimming classes In the various city parks are the ones which were taught at Sunset PoolTom Strait, Fred Schmidt, Jo-anne Kramer =»nd Hetty Knight handled the classes throughout the summer on Tuesdays and Fridays.YANKEE POOL CLASSES which began July 5 were taught by Harold Hayes and Dick Knight. Knight, » member of the Ohio State University swimming team, was recently named to an All-American swimming team by national swimming coaches.The Oirl Scouts received instructions on Wednesday at Sunset and Douglas pools and htke-awirns were held each Thursday a; Yankee and Douglas pools.The classes at Sunset werebroken into three classes, Each-i frr. rfor a different age bracket andeach receiving special instructors.The groups were for youngsters11-year* of Age and over, eight, nine and ten year-olds, and sixand seven year olds,In the latter class more than 32 children were taught the various methods of breathing, how to float, water safety and how to get into the water and out of it, Ross Kramer, pool manager said.“WITH THESE tiny tots,”Kramer said, our mam purpose is to get rid of their natural fear of the water. Once over that obstacle, the teaching becomes easier, They then enjoy being inthf*The older youngsters are taught water safety and the baste strokes at swimming. Once the youngstergets th# fundamentals, practicedevelops form and poise, Kramer added.Diving instruction* is also lining given at the pool. A two-weeks life-saving class was also given at Sunset pool. ,During the hot summer month* many local youngsters haunt the city pools.
