Continuing on their winning streak, the Medina Pony Tail All-Stars dumped defending champs Brunswick, 8-2, in the second outing of action in the tourney.Both teams went scoreless in the first inning as bothMedina’s Sue Ellsworth and Brunswick’s Robin Perry pitched fine softball. But things looked up for the Bee-ettes in the second when Debbie Gregroy cracked a solid hit out of infield, and was driven in by hits from Cathy Rake and Roni Crum. The Devils were unable to match the Medina runs as three Brunswickites in a row flew outThere was more cheering on the Medina side when, in the third, Marilyn Scott and Lynn Popovic were driven in by hits from Miss Gregory, Paul Griesinger, and Miss Rake.The fourth stanza was devoid of any score on both sides, and in the top of the fifth, the Bees were unable to garner any runs. But the Blue Devils fared much better.Bonnie Britton and BrendaSebek cracked out solid hits to get on base, and these two young ladies were driven in by safeties from Teri Carque and Miss Barnes. That brought the Devils within striking distance of the Medina crowd, though the Bees led at the end of five innings, 8-2.Both teams again went scoreless in the sixth, and as the game advanced into the last inning, the Bee-ettes still clung to their one run lead. But inthe top of the seventh inning, the Medinians started off with the top of the batting order. Sharp short-stop Kathy McClaning led off with a safety, when a Brunswick player errored on the play. Renee Vellenoweth, Lynn Popovic, and Beth Raker all whacked out solid singles, which helped drive in MissMcClaning.The Devil fielders thenshowed some of their fine abilities, as they worked out a beautiful play to tag an out on the rampaging Bee-ettes. This out did not daunt the Medina batters, as Paul Griesinger stepped up to the plate, andpromptly exploded for a single, driving in Miss Vellenoweth.Mean swinging Robin Dunning and Roni Crum, both slamming the ball into the outfield, drove in the remaining baserunners, though they were unable to score, as the effective Brunswick defense dealt with the remaining outs. The outs came too late for the Devil’s, however, since Medina had garnered five big runs before being retired.With the score in the mid-seventh inning, 8-2, the Brunswick batters went up to the plate looking for revenge.But the fired up Medina team was able to deal with the threat, allowing the Devil’s only one hit in the stanza.Winning pitcher for the Medinians was Sue Ellsworth, while Brunswickite Robin Perry was tagged for the loss.The Bee-ettes will have anight off tonight, when the Hinckley All-Stars have a go at the Devils.
