NORTH VERNON BOYMEETS WITH ACCIDENT.Has Played Ball With Dubuque, Ia.f Team For Seven Years.Howard Raringer with his wif® and children, arrived home last week from Dubuque, Iowa, where he has been playing ball this season, being forced to give up playing for the season on account of a broken ankle. Howard has played for a number of years with the Dubuque, la., Team of the Three-I League, and the injury which caused him to be laid up for the season was sustained whilesliding second base in a game between Dubuque and Qnincy, IU.V Teams, Sunday, June 27th. An X Ray examination of his left ankle showed that the ankle bone was splintered on one side and a small bone on the other side was fractured The accident is much regretted by the Dubuque Team as Howard had been appointed manager of the Team a few days before the accident occurred anl was given complete control of the team wntk full authority to hire or release players or make what changes he saw fit. No action was taken to appoint a new manager for the club, but not being able to take part in the games, Howard decided to come home for the summer. The Dubuque Telegraph-Herald in commenting on the accident said:, “No worse luck could have befallen i the club than Darringers loss from [ the line-up. It is not only the hard-[ est kind of luck for the player himself but to the men who are footing the bills. As Howard was injured while playing in a game, his salary will go along just the same and his doctor bill will be paid by the club owners. Just at this time this is a big item of expense as Daringer is a high salaried man.Something of Howard’s efficiency as a ball player and his popularity with the i'atis can be learned from the following clippings from Dubuque newspapers. The appointment of the “old re-i liable Howard” lias met with universal favor among the ranks of Dubuque fandom. For years he haa been a popular idol of the baseball loving public through his hard and ambitious efforts to play the game. Not a more popular selection could have been made and there is bound to be more interest in the team now that he is in full charge.—Telegraph Herald. It would be superfluous to try to tell the fans of Dubuque anything about the new manager of the club. Howard Daringer. Except for on® season, last year, he played practically all of his professional baseball as a member of the Dubuque Three I Club. He has seen player after player come and go, but season after season Howard has continued to be a favorite with Dubuque fans and one of the club's best hitters. He is now playing his seventh season as an outfielder with Dubuque. He has been above or close to the 300 mark in batting every year since he has been in baseball. — Daily Times Journal.
