Sports Happenings For The WeekendBy CHARLEY CROSBYThe Norwich Merchants, who are currently tied for second place with Greene with a record of 7 wins and 2 losses will take on the Cortland Merchants this Sunday in an Empire State League game which will be placed at Veteran’s Park with the first pitch to be thrown at 2 p.m.As reported in earlier articles, the Merchants have displayed and received much action and those who have given up on town team baseball in Norwich should give it another try as this is the first team in many years that has made a run for the top honors.In last week’s 18 to 8 rout of Whitney Point, the Norwich batting averages soared to new heights with six players hitting .333 or better.Jerry Parker leads the team as of July 27 with what should be one of the highest marks in the league. He is blasting away at a .461 clip.Second high for the Merchants is Mike O’Neil with a mark of .424.The rest of the team is as follows: Dave O’Neil, .394; Kieth Vanderlipp, .352; Don Goodwine, .343; Dave Petley, .333; Cliff Stone, .285; Fred Zahner, .241; Duane Schriver, .222; Frank Ei-anchi, .250; Walt Buffalo, .090.These averages indicate what one might want to expect if they attend the games.Except for football in recent years, support for local sports teams has been pathetic.Come on out and give these teams the support they deserve.
