A cucumber 10 inches long and nine inches around its middle was brought in yesterday by Mrs. Jess Kendrick, of Shady Spring who represents a mining family now carving a home from new ground.Mrs. Kendrick, whose husband is a machine man in the Raleigh Coal and Coke company's mines, says she has already can-red 22 quarts of cucumbers (she promises to bring us one of cucumber pickles) from her brand new victory garden By brand new she means the land had never been tended by-man or beast until this year. Her husband cleared aw’ay the brush and began from scratch. They have a fewr lots near the oldC. C. C. camp, and w-hen the war is over andthe mines drop back to three days a week(Do you remember?) they'll have a backlog of soil to use.
