Grand Prix drivers battle rain, track, each other seeking glory and prizesAction seldom slowed during the Greater Kansas City Grand Prix this weekend. Some of the favorites made their way to the winner’s circle but there were upsets too.It had been a foregone conclusion that Group 44, the professionals from Falls Church, Va., would win every class in which it competed, but that was expecting a bit too much, as it turned out. Bob Tullius, the leader of Group 44 himself, was entered in the C Production Triumph TR6 in the second race of the day. While Jack Hinkle of Wichita led as he was expected to in the powerful class A sports racing Lola, Tullius led the Cp cars.Tullius was having an easy time of it until he made a pit stop for a new fan belt. The time lost allowed Bob Hindson, Leawood, to sneak past with his Porsche 914-6 and a real battle developed between the two for the remainder of the race. Hindson began to drive faster than he had all day and led Tullius home for the class win.Meanwhile, Hinkle had lapped the field and was cruising around at reduced speed. One of Hinkle’s tires was slowly leaking and he was fortunate his lead was so substantial.TTiere were dark clouds over theD Production, C sports racing and B sedan event. Most of the drivers guessed right and picked rain tires. Some were not so lucky in their choice and had to pit when the torrent hit after only three laps.Brian Feurstenau, Group 44 driver of the DP Triumph GT6, was on rain tires, but went like a rocket even while the track was dry. Also in a tearing hurry on the dry track was Gene Strautman,Overland Park Triumph TR4 driver. Strautman moved from 10th grid position to fourth on the first turn. He held that position until the water drowned his dry tires. Discretion being the better part of valor, Strautman retired to the pits to ponder his gamble.Roger Noonan, the only Olathean entered in the races, did not fare too well. He started from the rear of the grid in his Jabro-Saab D Sports Racing car because he was unable to record a time in practice. After three laps of the race his clutch failed, ending his outing.Bob Lazier, Vail, Colo., became the only double winner last weekend when he took the checkered flag in Formula B and Formula Vee. Lazier won the Forumla Ford race here last year, but lost a wheel on the last lap and came to a sparky halt after just nosing over the line for third place. He finished his two races this year less dramatically.Other winners during the weekend were:JOHN MCCOMB. Hutchinson, A Sedan. Mustang.CARL FREDERICKS. Los Angelos. Calif..
