limps Ask Catchers Discard ShinguardsNew York, July 27 tUP— National league umpires would have catchers cut the size of shinguards or discard them entirely to stop the growing evil of blocking runners at the plate.Ten umpires who met w i t h League-president John A. Heydler yesterday pointed out that catchers have little fear of being spiked while armored with massive shinguards.The umpires, who described blocking as the most disturbing factor in National league play, claimed knee pads were sufficient to protect catchers from foul tips.
