It seems pitchers realize the National league ball, with its raised seams, is an ideal projectile for this fade-away.Carl Hubbell, screwball champion of th emajprs, beat his outstanding fade-away rival, Larry French, in a twisting duel yesterday when he pitched the New oYrk Giants to a 7 to 3 victory over the first place Pittsburgh Pirates in the first game | \ of a doubleheader. Chagnon replaced French in the sixth, and Spencer followed in the eighth.The Pirates came back in the nightcap and beat the Giants, 7 to 5, in 10 innings. Earl Grace, pinch hitting for Padden in the 10th, singled to score Comprosky and Suhr with the winning runs. Bill Terry drove out a home run in each game for New York.Dave Barbee, Pittsburgh’s left fielder, spiked his right leg and was carried from the field in the fourth inning of the first game.The Pirates suffered a half-gameloss to their lead by splitting the doubleheader, and now are fpur games ahead of the runnerup Chicago Cubs, who downed the third-place Boston Braves, 7 to 2. Hem-sley, Chicago’s catcher, had a perfect day at bat with four hits in four tries.The fourth-place Phillies rose to within .one percentage point of the Braves by overwhelming the Cincinnati Reds, 10 to 5. Brooklyn defeated the St. Louis Cardinals twice, 12 to 6 and 5 to 4. In the opener, the Dodgers registered 11 runs in the seventh inning, a record for the season.In the American league, the St. Louis Browns beat Washington 3 tp 2, by scoring three runs in the second inning. Heinie Manush of the Senators connected for three singles and a double in four tries.The tail-end Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago White Spx 6 to 1. Johnny Welch, formerly of the Newark Bears, made a good debut by limiting the Chisox to nine hits.New York at Cleveland and Philadelphia at Detroit were rained out.Ed
