Good Old Day*Gone, Alexander Says of BaseballSt. Louis — (IMS) — Grover Cleveland Alexander is “not” exactly broke,” but, he admits, he wouldn’t mind having some of the important money that passed through his hands during his great diamond career when he was still “Alexander the Great.”“Old Pete,” who pitched a national league record of 373 victories over 20 years of play, displacing the mark left by Christy Mathewson, volunteered a few homely remarks about baseball when here recently as associate manager and pitcher of the House of David team.“Baseball is a heartless game. It isn’t what you did yesterday; it's what you do today. Times are different now—In my best days we didn’t have the opportunity of the present players. Trust funds and the like were unheard of. No fatherly manager or club official gave us ahelping hand.” -The future, Alex? “I hope, when my arm gives out”—he pitches an inning or so in each game for the whiskered boys— “I can land a job as a coach or scout; baseball is my life.”
