ofanon;o-atr-asf-ayhehethfn-!Ctedrdaideinrs :t-io ;Tennis Tournament At 'Force Aug. 21-26The Tawaa Tennis club and the State College at Wilberforce have mapped plans for entertainging the 33rd National Championship tournament of the American Tennis Association. The tournament will be played on the new courts at ’Force from August 21 through 26.Highlight of the social aspects of the tournament will be a gala hall at Wampler’s Barn on Friday, August 25. This will be the second annual ball, one being held | last year in conjunction with the tournament. The tournament will open on I Monday, August 21, with a reception for participants and visitors. On Saturday, August 26, a Water Festival will close the tournament. Mack M. Green is chairman of the tournament committee.Strenuous efforts are now being made to prevail upon the United States Lawn Tennis Associationto allow Althea Gibson, ranking Negro women tennis player, to play in the national women’s championships in August. The U-SLTA will meet early in August to reconsider its exclusion policy against Negroes. The body will be faced with a dilemma. If it waives the rule that all players must belong to a club recognized by the USLTA, or a member thereof, in the case of Miss Gibson, ft will still not have solved the problem. For there is hardly a club affiliated with the USLTA that has a Negro member. This calls for a re-examination of the association’s rules entirely There has always been the tendency, according to observers, of restricting tennis to the so-called socialities. Those interested in opening up tennis to everybody should air their views to the United States Lawn Tennis Association, 120 Broadway, New York.
