‘‘I wish I could stick around to see the game, Fred Manuel said before departing Monday for Providence, R.I., where he's an assistant footballcoach at Brown University.Manuel, a former Vallejo High School star who went on to rack up the most playing time of any U. of Oregon performer his last two seasons as a defensive back, recently was home to visit his mother,Mrs. Juanita Manuel, 20 Sunset avenue.I think the North-South squads could give any freshman ball club a rough go, Manuel declared. Everyone's a star, a top-grade player, or he wouldn't have made the squads. That's more than can be said for most college freshman teams.Manuel broke into coaching at Brown last year. “We had our first, winning season since 1958, he said with obvious pride. I d like to see some Vallejo kids back there with us . . . but it is a long way from home . . . and it is expensive. We re $5,180 a year for tuition, second only back there to Harvard. We re in the Ivy League. Football’s not a crusade for the kids, but they have a lot of fun. It s a lot different approach than we had in the Pac-8.
