Two major events occurred in Junealone.The first was an advanced chess, computer-assisted tournament in Leon, Spain, in which each playerwas allowed to use a computer'sdatabase and game analysis to de-termine his moves. The winner was Viswanathan Anand ahead of Alexei Shirov. Judit Polgar and Miguel Illescas.The second event was a man-vs.-machine exhibition in Frankfort. Germany, featuring Vladimir Kramnik, Alexander MorozevichChessShelbyLymanand Peter Leko, as well as Anand and Shirov, against the program Frit/. Searching at a rate of 2.8 million positions per second, Fritz ran on a powerful Fujitsu Siemens KKOO computer. The time limit was 25 minutes per game for both humans and computer.Humanity escaped defeat when Shirov won his second game with Fritz and the final game of theexhibition to deadlock the overallscore at 5-5.
