From long cuftom a fair has been held atMortlake, in Surry, for a great number of years till about/fouryears fmce, when the church being robbed of all th^ valuables, and (Irong fufpicion being entertained that therobbery had been corilmitted by Grangers who were con^cerned in the fair, the gentlemen of the paiirti came to a determination to prevent the fair being held there ia future, and the following year the perlons who hadbeen in the habit of appearing there with their gingerbread (tails, toys, raree (liews, Sic. c. affembled on Barnes common, and held the fair there, which was much difliked by the refpetfable inhabitants, and it wasthem as a nuifance. On Tuefdayafternoon three girls ran for a holland fhift round a largeabout a quarter of a mile round, which was wonby a Shroplhire girl, about 18 years of age: the prizefhift was ornamented with a cockade of Mr. Byng’s on one fide, and one of Sir Francis Burden’s on the other.A gingling match likewife took place for a cheefe,and various other country fports were exhibited in thecourfe of the afternoon.
