Bicentennial wins Grantsville titleGRANTSVILLE — FormerFairmont Stae College threetime All-American Tim Murphy and his Bicentennial teammates performed a dazzling exhibition of three-on-threebasketball to capture the $300 championship prize in the Unlimited Division of the thirdannual Greater GrantsvilleShootout Saturday, June 23. Murphy teamed up withformer Alderson-Broadus College star Doug Bush, John Dye, and Bob Cable from Buchan-non, West Va, to unseat defending champs Station Unlimited from Connellsville, Pa.Other outstanding players who performed in this year’s tournament included former West Liberty star Kevin Liller, former Davis and Elkins star Kenny Niner, Frostburg State stars Steve Liller and Tony Doerr, Roanoke College star Brad Yoder, Juniata College star Roger Arnold, Bridgewater College star Dennis Gibson, and Eastern Mennonite College star Oren Yoder.Former Waynesburg College star Ron Moore scored on a 37 out of 40 possible points in capturing this year’s slam-dunk contest. Moore jumped over twoteammates to complete his final dunk bringing the Shootoutcrowd to its feet. Moore won $50 for his efforts. Former Juniata College standout Dave Bender won this year’s Unlimited Three-Point contest hitting 8 of15 possible baskets from 19-feet, 9-inches in 30 seconds.Current Garrett Community College head coach Dennis Gibson led WXIE from Oakland, Maryland to the championship in the Over 30 division. Gibson’s teammates included former Southern High coach Oren Yoder, Paul McCloud , and GCC assistant coach DaveMartin, Runners-up in the Over30 division were Arnold’s Floor Covering from Bedford, Pa. Arnold’s consisted of former Junaita College teammates Roger Arnold and Dave Bender along with David Marble.In the Varsity division, Brian Spiker hit three consecutive three-point shots to bring the Eagles of Terra Alta, W.Va. from behind to defeat Thomas Chevrolet, of Bedford, Pa. in the championship game. Spiker and his teammates Rich Kelley, Jason Brenneman, and MikeDuling received championship trophies. Shane Vent, Dave Ward, Robert Kuhnz and Trevor Wilt from Thomas Chevrolet received runners-uptrophies.Jon Houser of Grantsvillewon an authentic Chicago Bulls NBA jacket for winning theThree-Point contest and Troy Sextant of Charlestown, W.Va. hit 20 out of 20 free throws to take home a replica San Antonio Spurs jersey as Free Throw champion.Greg Clucas, Rick Wallace, Gabe Reyes, and Chris Clucas led the Three Musketeers of Cumberland to the championship of the J.V. division over the Timberwolves from Accident. The Timberwolves consisted ofRob Speicher, Derek Mason,and Billy Younkin. Both teamsreceived trophies.Rob Speicher sank 19 out of 20 free throws to win a “WANTED” T-shirt as FreeThrow Champion and Greg Clucas won a pair of Converse 260 hi-top leather basketball shoes as champ of the three-point Contest. ,'VOver 600 spectators witnessed the 44 tournament games in the two-day affair. The game, picked up in the third inning, was the completion of Friday night’s rained out contest.The Dans, who will playAmerican today at 4 p.m., jumped out to a 7-0 lead andwas leading 7-2 when rainhalted play Friday night. Valley took advantage of the overnight______1___« •break and tied the game at 7 going into the fourth.Eddie Talley, who had a two-run home run along with Caporale’s blast in the six-run first inning, belted a key fourth-inning double driving in a run to put the Dans up 8-7, a lead they wouldn’t surrender.In the top of the sixth inning, Monahan’s three-run shot put the Dans up 11-7.Valley, in their last at-bat, scored two runs but came up short and was eliminated from the tournament. Chad Colich took the loss and Danny Stevenson had the big hit with a double.Caporale, who came on in relief of Monahan in the third inning, picked up the win. J.
