.%V»V*V.V»V*V.!.V.V«Play a* Clearfield Saturday.IThe Grassflat Bobcats, perennial Mountain Top Women’s Softball League champions who have a winning streak approaching the 30-game level, will face quite a challenge in Saturday night’s exhibition game at Penelec Field for the benefit of the Clearfield Old Town Softball League.They will be facing Stan’s Auto Sales of New Castle, the U.S. Slow-Pitch Softball Association World Champions the last twoyears. ,The young ladies who make up Stan sroster have carved quite a success story since the team was organized in 1971. With the majority of the players just 12 to 15 years old then, the team played only on the local level.In 1972, Stan’s moved into serious competition and won both the Tri-Stab; League and Greater Pittsburgh League titles and finished third in the world tournament. The season record: 100 wins, 11 losses.In 1972, Stan’s again won the Tri-State and Greater Pittsburgh League championship capped a 90-6 season by winning their first world title at Petersburg, Va.Last year, Stan’s repeated as champs in the two leagues and also a iexed the world title for the second time. The tourney was held in Detroit, Mich. The season record: 91wins, 7 losses.Players now range from 16 to 22 years of age, and the 1975 team has embellished therecord with a 14-0 start in the Tri-State League and a 27-1 log in the Greater Pittsburgh League. Some games count in both leagues.Stan’s won the All-American Memorial Day Classic Tournament in New Castle and the Pace Electronics Invitational Tournament in Rochester, N.Y.The season record as of last weekend was 46-2, so Stan’s four-year mark is 328-26.No less than eight All-World players, including the Most Valuable Players of the last two USSSA Tournaments, pace Stan’s.Pitcher Luann Grybowski was 15 and first baseman Vernoica Funera was 16 when they became two of the youngest girls ever selected for the All-World-All-Star Team in1972.Miss Grybowski repeated in 1973, when she was named the All-World MVP and again in 1974. Miss Funera also was a repeater in1973.Mary West, the second baseman, was picked for the All-World team the last two years and was the tourney’s MVP last year.Other All-World players are shortstop Bunny Fajerski, third baseman Linda Argali and outfielders Rita Belavic, Cindy Calucci and Jan McDowell.Mike Sikofilos, manager of Stan’s, noted in a story after the 1973 world tourney that, “Time means nothing to these girls. They ........ ................ypractice three to four hours a day, except on game days.” SEd Grybowski, the business manager and coach, added, ‘ ‘All summer long the girls had -i-ito give up vacations and swimming.
