Then Ted Williams hits one out of here and there goes your ball game.”In the ninth, Bunning struck out Gene Stephens and Ted Lepcio for a total of 12, then got Williams on a long fly to right field.Williams also was the final out in the last no-hitter thrown at the Sox by New York's Allie Reynolds Sept. 28, 1951. Ted fouled to Yogi Berra that time.+ + +“I GUESS I was nervous but you don't notice how nervous you are in a situation like that,” Bunning said. “The best ball hit off me was the'first one by Stephens in the first inning to right field.”A1 Kaline backed to the wall to haul it in but catcher Red Wilson said the wind helped the drive.Coach Don Lund kept track of Bunning’s 332 pitches and broke them down to 51 fast balls, 49 sliders, 25 curves and seven change-ups.“I had real good control and good stuff,” Bunning added. As proof, the Red Sox did not hit a single ball to left field where stands the famed high wall where many a pitcher’s high hopes Have been buried.+ + +BUNNING RETIRED 10 batters on fly balls, two of them foul, and five grounders in addition to the12 strikeouts. While Bunning talked to the press, a note on a square piece of cardboard arrived from the Red Sox dressing room and losing pitcher Frank Sullivan,The note read:“Jim, greatest I've ever seen. You were terrific all the way. I knew if I couldn’t hit you nobody could.”It was signed:“Sully.”Sullivan has collected only five hits in 38 at bats. The Detroit bench refused, traditionally, to say anything about the no-hitter during the game but Bunning constantly let his teammates know he knew about ii.+ + +IN ADDITION, a constant chattelwent out from the Red Sox dug-out “Okay, Jim, we knlt;you’ve got us. We know you’re woriing on a no-hitter.”At the end of the eighth inning Bunning said to Coach Tommy Henricb: “Well, I've got to get three more.”Henrich, who didn't want to jinx it, replied: “Okay, Jim, we’ll go out and get you three more — runs.”Kaline ran in to give Bunning the ball after catching the fly by Williams. “I just wanted to make sure of the ball,” Kaline said.Wilson added: “I knew it wasn’t hit that good.”As the second batter to face Bunning, Pete Runnels, top league batsman limped down to first and almost beat out a smash to third, “A fast guy would have beaten it out,” Bunning said.Runnels injured his left leg in the top half of the inning while completing a double play pivot throw.
