Saint Louis Cards Will Conduct Try-out Camp at Ephrata ParkWord has just reached this office that the St, Louis Cardinals, who last week announced a tryout camp at Dickinson College Field, in Carlisle, will also conduct a camp at the War Memorial Park, in Ephrata, on Monday and Tuesday, July 24 and 25. Thecanip will be under the direction of veteran Red Bird scouts Jerry Kath-rrmnn, C. S. “Pop” Jyelchner, and John Braekenridge. with the assistance of “Nubby” Weaver, a former diamond star, of Terre Hill, Vho is working with the Red Birds.This is the first time that a tryout camp such as this has come to this section and a great number of the young diamond aspirants between the ages of 17 and 23, are expected to be in attendance. A special invitation has been extended to three members of last year’s New Holland High School team, to be on hand for the try-outs. They are lanky Dick Sweigart, Bill Gable, whose hitting and pitching sparked the huskies, and the team’s catcher, Warner Frazier.The Ephrata camp is one of many such camps conducted throughout the country during the summer in an effort to discover potential major league taient. The Cardinals were the first team to use the tryout camp method in the major leagues, as well as the first team to originate the farm system, where players can gain the experience and polish necessary to prepare them for major leagues. The Red Bird Scouts at these camps have the ability to determine whether a player has the natural ability which can be developed into the smooth perfection seen in the majors. The merit of this system is proven by the fact that five of the present Cardinals were signed at try-out camps, where their fielding, throwing, batting and base-running were noted by the scouts.The drills at Ephrata will begin at 11:00 a. m. each morning, and will run straight through to’ 4:00 p. m. Those who attend are asked to bring their own gloves and shoes, and uniforms,' if possible, as the Cardinals do not furnish this equipment* Anyexpenses incident to attending the camp will be refunded to any player who signs a contract with any of the 21 minor league teams in the famous Cardinal farm system.
