Foley 5-2 in a squeaker Saturday, and then 18-4 in a blowout Sunday for the two-game sweep.When head coach Darryl White said the Union City bats finally woke up, he wasn't kidding.“This is what we expected right from the start,” White said after his team lashed out 14 hits and two home runs in just four innings. “This is the way they can hit the ball.”Both Union City and Foley came to abrupt ends in District III tournament play, winning just one game ;ach. For UCLL, the Mayor’s Trophy may prove to be a huge boost heading into the Derby InvitationalSkyworkers sizzlein 8-3 win vs. NSBTournament.“We’ve won a few times down there,” White adds of Derby. “It is agood tournament with very good competition.”For Foley, there is plenty of time to regroup before Derby.“We will have some workouts before we go down to Derby,” notes Foley head coach John Rivers. “We know where everyone needs to be now, and we will try our best.”* * 3 * # 3 m A3 ♦ 4 ## r# # * r/i # #VGame One Union City 5,Foley 2Game one was a tight pitcher’s duel, as Union City’s Tim Smith and Foley’s Steve Lafo battled Saturday night at Union City’s Frank Raucci Field.Smith baffled Foley batters bymixing up a fastball with a backbreaking curveball and changeup, until his own back gave out in the fourth inning.Union City broke a scoreless tie in the third inning when Smith and Andrew Herbert led with back-to-back sineles. while Chris Bisson and MauGomes followed with back-to-backRBI sacrifice flies.Meanwhile Smith, who had struck out six erf the first eight batters, had a no-hitter going into the fourth inning, until Foley’s Jim Greco legged out an infield single. The speedy Greco created havoc on the base paths, first going to second on a wild pitch, then escaping a run-down between second and third, ultimately sneaking into third when the base was left unoccupied in the mayhem.Smith re-injured his back when lunging to make a tag on Greco, but Bisson came on to pitch Union City out of the jam.Foley got on the board against Bisson in the fifth on a Matt Demers infield single, a wild pitch, a passed ball, and an RBI single from Stefe Lafo.But UCLL put the game away in the fifth, when Herbert rocked a one-hopper off the fence in right-center for a double. With two outs, a Gomes single put two men on, and White ripped a double to deep center to plate two runs. A pair of passed balls allowed White to scamperhome.Foley pushed one more run home, as Dave Weaver and Greco led the sixth with singles, with a run scoring on a UCLL error.‘ ‘Tim and (Steve) Lafo had everyone baffled,” White said of the game-one struggle.
