He owes his life to a submerged log in the river at the foot of Wall street, opposite the sawmill Phoenix, where he was rescued, almost insensible and bleeding profusely from a wound in his scalp, Saturday night by Sergeant Nelson and Officer Boldman.According to his own story, he was slugged and robbed by two strangers who followed him from a saloon and was hurled down the rocky river bank at a point where the guard rails were removed. Ho landed astride of the submerged timber, which kept his head above the water, while the remainder of his body was immersed in the cold river, he police believed he had staggered off the street and down the river bank while drunk. Mathews says he was robbed of $25 and is left practically penniless by his experience, as he was turned over to the county physician for treatment this morning.His scalp wound is a bad one and required considerable work by the emergency hospital surgeons. He was heard moaning in pain by parties who notified the police. Sergeant Nelson worked waist deep in the water re remove him.
