*il' '■ ' -i.;;SENECA — After the close ofthe 1974 pony league campaign, one of the concerns facing theTri-Countv tournamentWchamps, Minooka, was that an ace pitcher and catcher would not return with the club. The catcher was Roy Vicichwho is now doing well with Minooka s American Legion team. The question arose, Who would replace Roy?Mark Mitchell was named Minooka’s starting catcher at the start of this season’s ponycampaign and if statistics do not lie, then Mark is proving every bit the hitter which his predecessor was.Mitchell collected five hits and drove in 10 runs as Minooka blasted Seneca 14-2 and 25-3 in a twinbill Thursday which wrapped up the regular seasontitle for the victors. The five hits by Mitchell broke the team’s record for most hits in a season which was 40 held by Bruce Miller who is right near that mark again.Mitchell has 41 hits so far and his three-run homer in the first game was his ninth of the year which ties him with V'icich for the top total in the team’shistory.Miller is not far behind in the race with 39 hits (he had 3 for 3 in the first game) and in home runs (he hit his seventh, a solo homer in the third inning giving Minooka a 2-0 lead in game number one).Terry Glennon, who was the winning pitcher in a four-hit effort, hit a two-run double in aseven-run fourth and Mitchell added his three-run shot in a five-run fifth to close theMinooka scoring.Mitchell had 3 for 4 and JohnFillipitch and Glennon, withtwo doubles, had two hitsapiece in the 14-hit attack offpitcher Dan Johnson. Johnsonfinished with one strikeout andthree walks.Glennon had eight strikeouts and no walks. Mike Thomas had two hits for Seneca and Gary Mavity, the other two. Mavity scored one run in the fourth and Jeff Rosencrans thesecond run in the fifth.Minooka registered itssecond game victory with constant scoring, with Dave Bretsch’s three-run homer in the first beckoning the charge.Mitchell stroked a two-run single in an eight-run second and the rout was on in the nextfive-inning game.Mitchell had another two-run hit in a four-run third, and Mark Bretsch, who had twohits, and Ed Norton, who had three, poled doubles in a nine-run fifth.Dave Bretsch had 4 for 4 andTed Hoffman, Jim Schreiner with a double, and Fillipitch added two hits apiece in a 20-hit onslaught against Jeff Hallett.Schreiner was the winning pitcher, allowing just three hits and striking out five with one walk.
