MERCHANTS TO FACE BERGHOFF NINE THURSDAYWhen the Gary Berghoff’s take the field on Thursday evening it will be the second of a three game serieswith this club which is Gary’s fast-est baseball representative.Earlier in the season the Berg-hoff’s, clad in their nifty red, white and blue uniforms, took a close one from the Merchants and will be out to repeat, thereby eliminating the necessity of a third game.However, the Merchants are a different team right now. They have found themselves. Ed. Wente has his men placed now so as to get the very best results. The boys are hitting at a terrific clip again. Martin* Blackstone and Fletcher have all hit the ball hard in the past three games.In Fleming, the Merchants have the best young pitcher in the country, Ed. Wepte thinks that Tommy with this season’s experience against good ball clubs, will erase his worst complex, wildness, and will eventually get the full value of his great speed and stuff. Fleming has set down some very wicked hitters this year and is improving all the while. He should take the Gary team with the club's improved fielding behind him.The Merchants have some real work cut out for them. From the Gary game they jump to Valparaiso to try and keep pace with Chesterton in the Northern Indiana league. Hammond is now but one game behind Chesterton for the leadership and Valparaiso is no easy club to whip.On Thursday night, June 26th, the old favorites will again be seen at Turner Field—the ever pleasing House of David with the strongest team they have had in years.
