v Stahlin Allows Beards 4 Hits; Miss Mitchell _ Performs, Before 2,500A -young blade slaved the Beards by lamplight last night. In fact not in some time has such a youthful barber hacked away afc base-balTs best whiskers. He was Billy Stahlin, seventeen-year-old Westchester schoolboy, whose sharpest scissors were smoking, curve balls which enabled the Grays to beat the House of . David 2-1 before the largest crowd old-time fans cr-n recall as having glimpsed nine- frames of baseball-here., Stahlin was the balm which .glossed over what disappointment there was in the performance of Miss Jackie Mitchell, signed by the Beards Sunday at one grand per month, last night the Mississippi Miss hurled one frame and for it she received some $34—a day's pay. She was decidedly “ ineffective,—stage-struck, said her worst critics who had seen her perform before. The Grays doffed a courteous cap to her opening heat effort, trotted for outs and hit purposely into a double play. Jackie has a slow dropping curve which can be seen from, the bleachers. Apparently she could not manage it last night, even- after an unusually long warm-up.And so it was. with vocal relief / that Walsh, speedball hurler, replaced her in the second and the game began.Meanwhile young Stahlin showed his wares by fanning LaFleur and Cross, two. of the heaviest hitters on the Benton Harbor outfit, in that opener. He retired another on strikes in the second and only in the eighth did he fail to whiff at least one of the invaders. Bob McNamara warmed up in the last three heats but the vociferous Paddy Smith eased Stahlin out of difficulty with-no little judgment and he wasn’t needed. Today, incidentally. McNamara has a tryout, with the Chicago White Sox after they meet the Yanks in Gotham. Bob turned down what he said was unimportant money offered him by the latter a week ago.■ Nothing eventful occurred until the third, although Irving, who replaced Barnes at first for the Grays, did reach third on Scott’s fumble in the second. But in the next heat the Grays collected both runs and the ball game.Stahlin, first up, spanked an automatic double to the left field canvas and was eased on a notch when Buck grounded to short. Andy Fisher hoisted but Dutch Woerner lifted an untouchable pop behind first which caromed into the crowd and thus gained for the Huntcrmau two more automatic bags. Stahlin trotted in with the first-., Tremper then banged one to Anderson at third who tossed low to first, Tremp was safe when the pill trickled down towards home and Woerner scrambled in on an unusual play — the first baseman, who dashed in for the loose ball, failed on the quick pick-up. Afc any rate two were home and it mattered not that Irving waved. The fourth and the fifth were uneventful. But the Grays featured the sixth by killing what appeared a pair of Bearded swats, Dutch Woer-ner knocked down the first back of -second and Jimmy Bergen made a beautiful assist on Emmers* hard bounder for the other crack demonstration. The Grays nearly shot another home in that inning. Two were away when Irving’s fielders' choice landed him safely. He stole second and was safe at third on the sackman’s muff. Jim Boland was beaned and was drawn clown, to second. . Fleming,-, losing backstop, threw down to nab him and Irving gamboled home on a gamble but lost on the snap-back. .Stahlin got into first difficulty In the seventh. Cross collected - the 2nd David hit and Holland walked. But Cross was out at third on Scott's fielder's choice to the mound. There went part of the menace. Joseph singled to right but Andy Fisher made a nice assist home and Faddy Smith tagged the streaking' Holland 'eight feet from the pan. Stahlin then steadied and waved Anderson. The eighth produced tight ball all around again bub in the ninth the Davids sent home their solitary run and kepfc the fans on theix toes with the tying run which died on third. Ernmer started it with a single through second. Then Cross doubled; behind first. Tire first then scored : on Holland’s infield out. Scott-fanned at a change of pace but Joseph walked. However, Anderson spanked a hopper to the steady Woerner at second and it was good night.Stahlin fanned ten men in the interesting fracas and Walsh three. Both men allowed four safe swats.Chief Bender, injured at Philadelphia recently, is sfill in the hospital, it was said last night, and thus did not appear with his club. The crowd was larger by some 500 persons than that which was rained out a week ago and exceeded last year's gathering for a similar night game by several hundred. Then, the Beards won 3-2.'And so Iasi night youth showed the way to real ball players—men who each Spring take on virtuallv all the major league clubs hi the Florida Grapefruit League and a team which has an unbiased rating' as the best on the road. The tables:Grays AB K I! ro A ELai- 3b ............4 0 1 i i oFisher, rf .........4 0 0 0 10Woerner, 2b ......4 i j 2 4 0 jTremper.
