Three cars were eliminated on the second lap of the first Sportsman heat when five out of six cars in the heat ended up in the fourth turn wall ,,,Ken leader Bernie Coffin of Athol spun while leading the event,Jim Small of Surrey, N.H., was involved but came a way with minor damage and later went on to post his second victory of the season in the 20-lap feature. It was his seventh feature win of the year at Monadnock. Andy Brooks of Winchendon finished second followed by newcomer Chuck Vivian of Windsor, Vt.Controversy erupted after the Street Division feature when Vivian and the owner of his car, Greg Felton (Fred Felton’s son), were told by Pit Steward Bill Hubbard that they were not going to be paid for third place because they were running illegal tires. It is the opinion of this writer that the Pit Steward should have informed the car owner of the illegal tires BEFORE the races rather than having an excellent performance by Vivian taken away later.Greg Felton said after the feature, he would have changed tires before the race if had been told about the infraction earlier. Hubbard was unavailable for comment,ERNIE HASTINGS OF GILL traveled to Hudson, N.H., Sunday and took home a solid third place feature finish.Remember, no racing at Monadnock tonight. Claremont Speedway will have a special event for the Sportsman cars along with the regular classes Saturday. Monadnock will conduct the Open Competition 100-lap Arthur, Whitcomb Trophy Race Sunday night at 6 p.m.Editor’s note: Chip Cormie is on vacation.
