Lilith Inning VictoryKeeps Norwich FirstHOMER - The Norwich Merchants pounded out 13 hits Sunday, but it took a two - run burst in the ninth inning to give them an 8-6 victory over hostHomer.For the Norwich baseball team it was the seventh victory in eight starts this season. As a result the Norwich team continues to lead the Empire State League.Veteran John Stewart led off the ninth with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball by the Homer catcher. Dave Petley drove him in with a base hit and then an error let Petley reach third. Pitcher Bill Bradt scored him with a sacrifice fly to clinch the victory.The Braves threw an early scare into the Merchants by scoring four runs in the first three in nings before the Norwich bats came alive.Archie Reid started tilings off for Homer in the second with a lead off single and Carl Coye followed with a base hit to put men on first and third. A triple by Don Cook drove them home and he scored the third run on an outfield fly. A single by Bill Robinson, a Norwich error and a sacrifice fly put Homer four runs ahead at the end of the third.Norwich fought back in the 1 fourth as Catcher Dave O’Neil 1 stroked a single and moved to J second on an error. Petley sing- f led O’Neil home and Steve Rice £ walked before Larry Abbott, dou- ( bled both runners in.O’Neil got things going again f in the fifth with a base hit. John f Stewart followed with a single and t they both came home on a double F by Bradt. aHomer tied the game at 5-5 5without a base hit in their half s of the fifth as the Merchants committed two errors. hHits by Abbott and Jim Down- s ey set up the sixth run for Nor- e wich as O’Neil came through with his third hit of the day scoring r Abbott. sHomer knotted the score again h at 6-6 in their half of the eighth r when Carl Coye and Tom Coye d both doubled.Bradt toiled all the way in the w 90 - degree heat for the Merch- h ants and got his seventh win ag- tc ainst one loss for the season. He h gave up nine hits.Dom Quatrocchi worked six and tl two thirds innings for Homer.
