INDEPENDENT BALL NEGRO’S SOLE HOPE! SAYS GRAYS BOSSBy CUM POSEY Manager, Homestead GraysAfter due consideration, the Homestead Grays withdrew from membership in the Negro National Association. This step was taken mainly to assure the men associated with me, including players, and who-have confidence in my judgment, that every effort was being made to . uphold the caliber* of the Grays I club, and to insure financial returns | which would 'permit the Grays to keep their standing as the recognized leader of the colored dubs, especially in Western Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. The president of the Negro Na-tioal Association did everything humanly possible to put the league over and to help the league clubs. Regardless of the possibilities of the future for league baseball, the president called for the Grays to play independent baseball if they wished to make any money.League cities, with «Chicago not playing at home, and three or four gamls a week being played at Greep-iee Fieldwere not su fficient-to-, pay. . players’ salaries and look after incidental expenses. The Grays were playing for 35 per cent of the gross, with 5 per cent going back into the league. The Grays had never played any games for less than 40 per cent any place. We are also under certain obligations to play independent clubs of this district,- as it was these clufes who furnished the games and money which,^ made the Grays possible. The league will continue' to per-, ate and we hope successfully. However, the Grays must be on the outside along with Cubans, Black Yanks, Philadelphia Stars and Bach-arachs.
