Cubs Drop Both Ends of Double Header to CantonCanton handed the Zanesville Cubs a double defeat yes* terday. The Cubs got only two singles off Chuck Dyke, fresh from Cleveland schoolboy ranks, as they dropped the afternoon contest, 2 to 1, and passed up several scoring opportunities to lose the night game, S to 6.AH runs in the afternoon contest were unearned. Clay Bryant started for Zanesville but a wild throw by Harry Land in the thirdinning paved the way for two runs. Bryant was forced to leave the contest when he sustained a leg injury during a collision at first base.yBob Snider replaced Bryant and blanked the Tars with one bit during the final five innings. Zanesville's lone run came in the fifth on Jim Reggio’s smgle to right, an error and Fred Marsh's outfield fly. Dyke halted all other threats.Bill Sommers, first up in the third, hit in front of the plate. Land picked up the ball and threw ft wild to first, the throw going into the weeds back of right field, and Sommers scored before the ball could be returned to the infield. Bryant retired the next two men, hut singles by Sam Gentile, Sam Diblazl and Tex Batts accounted for another run.Bob Vittoz started the nightcap, but was wild and was knocked from the box in the fourth Bud Herman took over and allowed only one unearned run during the rest of the game but the Cubs were slopped by A1 Widmar, who replaced Starter Jim Decker, erstwhile third baseman.Canton scored in the first on a walk, a wild pitch and a single but the Cubs moved ahead in the second when Ed Sauer hit a home run over the lefc-center field fence after Marsh had walkedThe Cubs* lead was short, however. as in the second, Sommers duplicated Sauer's feat with two mates aboard. The Cubs tied the score In the third when John Na* ponic singled with the bases loaded This rally died when Charlie Clifford, apparently thinking two were cut, was doubled off second as Reggio fi'ed to rightThe Terriers scored three times in the fourth to send Vittoz to the showers and take the lead for good.The Cubs scored once in the fourth when Herman singled to loft and advanced to third when Barnes let the ball go through him. Marsh singled him home but he was caught off first to nip the rally.Successive doubles by Sauer and Chford gave Zanesville one run in the fifth and Glided Decker.
