Unbeaten_ :-*mBelvederesnagsDefending champions receive extra-inning hit from first-time All-Star to win Sub-District 2C championship game.By LARRY TAYLORSports EditormBELVEDERE — A first-time All-Star delivered for Belvedere when it needed it most.Eddie Smith singled in two runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to snap a tie and Belvedere held on in the bottom of the inning to defeat Midland Valley 4-2 Wednesday night in the Sub-District 2C championship game.“It’s his first time on an All-Star team.” Belvedere manager Stacy Butler said of Smith. “It’s time for him to step up and take his role.”Smith did. looping a single over the second baseman’s head to score Austin Stuart and Cody McElhaney with what proved to be the winning runs.McElhaney then escaped a two-on, two-out jam in the bottom of the seventh to get the win.With the win, Belvedere advances to the district tournament in Greenwood, where it will play its first game on Saturday at 6 p.m.“We’ll definitely have to raise our level of play to compete at that level,” Butler said. “We rode our pitching and defense pretty much (in the sub-district). It’s just a matter of hitting.”Belvedere managed only six hits Wednesday night off Midland Valley’s Brett Godwin, who went the distance.“I think Brett pitched an excellent ballgame,” said Midland Valley manager Butch Godwin. “He kept them off balance, which is what we wanted to do, and it almost workedout.”As good as Brett Godwin was, Belvedere’s Mitch Cook, Sean Hol-sonback and McElhaney were even better, limiting Midland Valley to just three hits, including doubles by Trevor Hazel and Charlie Berend-sen. |With two outs in the bottom of , the seventh, Channing Benton singled off the fence in right center and Hazel reached on an error toVSee BELVEDERE, Page 3B
